Acting secretary Jane Byrnes distributed the minutes of the member meeting of 7-15-08 and summarized the results. b>Treasurer Jan Decker stated $1440 contributions to Community Center last week.Discussion about basements with flood water and sewer breakage: Ron promised Dana Knauf, Carl Hamm, Jeanetta Minor, Syble Cocannauer, Carla Lee, Bill Stafford and Kim Eglholm to call a meeting with city councilman Jeff Longwell. Some homes have been in their families for 50 years without flooding. Two changes that may have changed water drainage are the car lot recently developed on Tyler and the new Lowe's displacing the wetlands to the north on our ditch. Three proposed solutions is to widen the Westlink Ditch as wide as it is north of 13th; install a valve to prevent backflow in drains; and pay taxes on finished basement space, but under protest. Speaker Bob Neier, director of Master Gardeners at Sedgwick County Extension Service said to overseed now with fescue to overtake weeds, and fertilize until November. He explained the pros and cons and showed pictures and branch samples of trees that will do well in west Wichita. Visit the County Extension Arboretum to see these trees. He used KSU booklets, Tall Fescue Lawns and Preferred Trees for South Central Kansas. Ways and Means chair Carla Lee established clubs for giving to community center: silver, gold, platinum and century. Police Officer Heather Frazier cautioned that closed garage doors prevent thefts. As the economy declines, crime goes up. There have been some disturbances near Buffalo Park. Communications chair Tony Decker stated there are a few Link Letter routes that need deliverers. Tony occasionally sends neighborhood news updates to those for whom he has email addresses. Activities: Graham Realtors Clean Up Day fliers were delivered to residents for Saturday 9-27-08 in the area Westlink-13th-Tyler-Central.Sunshine Committee cards will be signed on Tuesday, 9-23-08 in the Park West Plaza community room. Folks can send names of people who need cards, to John and Joyce Handley. Park West Plaza has designed and printed the cards, and will mail them. The Candidate Forum will be at another location, Hope Mennonite Church, on Tuesday 9-30-08, featuring the League of Women Voters asking questions of candidates for county commissioner and state Board of Education. Anthony Shields asked for helpers for aHaunted House in the community center building the week before Halloween. Probable cost:$5/person or $10/family with profits to the community center fund. Community Center: Ron stated that large donors want neighbors to provide baseline donations before they contribute. He asked, Who doesn't want to help? |
